Here are the lyrics (written in Cape Verdean creole)...
Saiona d'Vinte One
Ja soma na cabeçada
Pal bem conta o k'el k'ouvi
Ma el ka conta kel palmada
K'es da sê filha Zizi
Hora k'bô conta um conte
Conta-l tintin por tintin
Ka bô crescental um ponto
Pa-s ka levob pa Furtin
Here is my translation:
"Big-Skirt Twenty-Years-Old"
Came very proudly
To tell gossip
But she did not say nothing
About what happened to her daughter Zizi
When you talk about something
You've got to say everything
Without adding nothing
If you don't they'll land you in jail
Did I save your life? |

Yes, you did! You almost did. Gee, this Caboverdean has gone pretty far from Portuguese in years, hasn't it? Online dictionaries don't know such words So your translation is of great help. I was dying to know what that "tintin-tintin" phrase meant..
But, it's still unclear what happened to Zizi
See, all I've got is Romanian (I'm mixed Russian-Romanian) and some Spanish I learnt in school. I'm even able to understand some other Cesaria's songs when I see them written, but this appears not to be the case so I'd like to ask you for more clarifications, if you don't mind.
And, thank you very much!!! |

Hello Mic , hello nowinter,
What happened to Zizi ....
In fact it isn't told explicitely in the song , but it is probably a love affair that left traces .
" La grande jupe de vingt ans "
Elle arrive avec sa malice
"la grande jupe de vingt ans"
pour rapporter le ouï-dire ( ragot)
mais ce qu'elle ne dit pas ,
c'est la déconvenue de sa fille Zizi .
Qui rapporte une histoire
doit la raconter par le menu ( en détails )
sans en rajouter
sinon c'est la prison du Fortin .
Amitiés

En fait , plus je lis la traduction et moins je comprends .
Tu comprends quoi , toi , Mic?
Et vous , les autres ?
Qu'est-il donc arrivé à Zizi ? |

"En fait , plus je lis la traduction et moins je comprends .

No, I still have not a clue about Zizi's story
Besides, I don't understand why one should be imprisoned for not telling the whole story when he gossips
AND, the last but not the least: Mic says the meaning of "Ja soma na cabeçada" is "came proudly" as far as I could see, whereas you, josiane, translate it as "arrive avec sa malice", which means something very different, - it's some annoyance and bad behaviour - again, as far as I understand.
So, how'd she came??
And then, josiane, you insert a word which I think isn't there in the original: "déconvenue". It means "disappointment", doesn't it? I don't think you can go this far with "K'es da sê filha Zizi", and Mic seems to be more close.. |

Je vois avec amusement que l'affaire de la petite Zizi prend des proportions démesurées sur ce forum!
Personnellement, je pense que si le texte reste aussi vague et elliptique, c'est parce qu'il ne s'agit pas d'un article de journal à valeur informative mais bien de texte de chanson, plus poétique. En réalité, peu importe ce qui est réellement arrivé, c'est à chacun d'imaginer sa propre version des faits.
Nowinter, I agree with Josiane when she says "it is probably a love affair that left traces". That is what I have always thought.
As for the sense of the last sentence, I think the 4 last verses are a general conclusion, which does't necessarily apply to the Zizi case.
To me, the moral of the story is:
Prison=trouble, so if you try to eschew, hide (or even lie about) some memories, you'll somehow be in trouble. |

Bon, j'ai fauté en voulant arrondir les angles, sans entrer dans les détails. Le détail, puisque vous voulez tout savoir, c'est que Zizi a reçu une gifle (palmada).
Pour reprendre la traduction de Josiane, ça serait donc:
"mais elle ne raconte pas
qu'ils ont giflé sa fille Zizi"
Content(e)s?
Sorry for my translation, I would not selling some secrets: the word "palmada" means "the slap". Then here's the last release, less poetic:
"But she did not say nothing
about the slap they gave to her daughter Zizi" |

Somehow I stopped receiving this topic's reply notifications, so I'm a bit late with this, sorry.
Thank you all, it's quite clear now. I should notice the "palmada" word 'cause I know what "palma" means So poor Zizi was slapped by her mother for something her mother wouldn't speak of But it doesn't work this way living on an island: if you speak, you've got to tell everything.
I realized I can understand most of the French at the level spoken here But kreole is still too packed for me to understand.
Moralite: hey-ho!!![/i] |
